Protect your skin

Summer is officially here, and that means you need to be aware of the damage the sun can do to your skin.

Too much sun can lead to skin cancer, which can lead to death. But there are things you can do to lower your risk. Here are two:

  1. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you're out in the sun. Experts say the proper and repeated use of sunscreen can lower your risk of skin cancer by as much as 50%.

  2. Visit a dermatologist annually. If you notice any abnormalities on your skin (for example, a mole that itches, bleeds, or simply looks different from the rest of your moles), go see the dermatologist immediately.

Following these simple steps could help save you and your family a lot of trouble. Sure, applying sunscreen can be a pain, as can visiting the dermatologist -- especially if you feel like there's nothing wrong -- but they are both a lot less painful than a cancer diagnosis.
