Happy Cancer Survivor’s Day!
June 2 is National Cancer Survivors Day. Since this is my first year in remission, I’ll celebrate today. I may even enjoy a Jack and Diet Coke later.
I’m also thinking of the thousands (or more) of other survivors today. I hope you take a few minutes to reflect on your accomplishments. Surviving cancer is no joke. One of my favorite rappers (Rakim) has a line that starts, “I’ve got a question as serious as cancer …” And cancer is indeed that serious. It’s a killer.
I have had days in the past 18 months or so where I wasn’t sure I’d achieve remission. But, by the grace of God, I’m still kicking. In fact, my body feels like it’s healing. I don’t need as much sleep as I had needed. I have more energy, and I am genuinely positive more often.
My youngest daughter just turned six and graduated from kindergarten with straight As. I’m so glad God is giving me more time with her and my family. My family has been my why throughout my cancer journey. My love for them and the love they give me has been why I’ve fought to live.
If you’re a fellow cancer survivor, I’d love to hear from you and learn about your why. Enjoy today! We’ve earned it.
